a Bush in Ottawa

A day after Bush’s whirlwind tour of Ottawa, the snow has begun to fall. It is a cold snow of loneliness as some 5,000 to 13,000 protestors climb aboard their busses and go back to their dorm rooms and single apartments (and in many cases, their parents’ homes) in Toronto, Montreal and even as far away as Winnipeg. Godspeed little protestors. You did good.

The protestors were well-behaved and mostly peaceful with only one incident requiring requiring police intervention. Get 13,000 people in an area together and see if a fight doesn’t break out. Try it! Of course, there were some tensions but they probably didn’t warrant the barricading of several buildings downtown.

There was some pot-smoking.

Still, the question is: was it effective? Bush was pretty-well isolated from most human contact while he was here, appearing once on Parliament Hill to be greeted by boos and chants of “Bush Go Home”. Sources say, he remained folksey and casual. Undeterred, the President will climb aboard his Super Air Fortress and fly to Halifax for his speech to the nation.
