Guero
Beck released a new album a couple of weeks ago and I neglected to mention that it’s very good. Beck’s a talented individual who has pissed off more than one fan with his varying styles. I’ve followed his music since “Mellow Gold” (Beck) and have enjoyed all of his albums at some point. Many have continued life in my collection.
His newest is a bit of a return to his earlier stylings. It’s sample-heavy with blues-guitar under-pinnings and sly lyrics. The leading single off the album, E-pro was released early on the iTunes Music Store and immediately popular. It’s a good single and fairly representative of the style of the album. Funky and grooveable, it is perhaps a bit closer to “Midnite Vultures” (Beck) than would make some die-hards comfortable. The second track is a silly bit of Los Angeles imagery, complete with whistling and hooting muchachos (“Guero” means white boy in spanish slang). This is not the strongest track on the album. “Hell Yes”, “Broken Drum” and “Farewell Ride” make up my favourite tracks here and are worth a listen.
