LEET HAXORS!
Howdy. Long time since I rapped at ya. </anchower>
I picked up the new Longwave CD tonight. It’s decent so far and a bit different from their first CD, the “The Strangest Things” (Longwave). My initial impression is favourable. It’s decent guitar pop.
This morning dria informed me the n3wb forum was infected with something unusual. A file cleverly named newexpl.php wanted to be saved every time she opened the front page. This is not normal. Then, while I was checking this out for myself (the file was originating from off-site at 195.95.218.173, registered to RIPE Network Coordination Centre (RIPE is right)), dria pointed me to a description of the exploit on the wordpress support pages. A quick search found similar mentions on the phpBB forums with the advice to upgrade the installation.
(the file contained in newexpl.php, incidentally was a mime-encoded trojan, undoubtedly of the spyware variety which would happily install itself from a Windows user’s copy of Internet Explorer).
This, as it happens, turned out to be an unpleasant experience. The older versions of the board were not immediately available so I decided to download the full install and go from there. After backing up, I wrote over the current installation with the new files…

Unfortunately, the upgrade portion of the installation didn’t work with the 2.0.11 version I had installed and crapped-out while trying to upgrade the database. What followed was a gross session with mysql manually updating the tables with the new schemas painfully extracted from the php script that was supposed to do the work for me. I think I got it, but there was a point where I was sorely tempted to just ditch the whole thing. It’s not like anyone uses the forum much anyway.
So, I will finish with my usual response to the script monkeys who insist on doing these things to my web software: FUCK YOU AND YOUR TROJANS! YOU SUCK! TRY DOING SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE WITH YOUR NON-EXISTENT “TALENT”.
Thank you. I feel much better now.
