Thanks to all for the posting(s). I, too, was able to fix my postfix problem by following the directions given above.

I had the problem when I upgraded from Panther to Tiger "in place" (i.e., NOT a clean install).

Hey again, Simon.

Thanks for the tip. I tried editting the contents but Wordpress seems to enjoy eating the tags and adding its own formatting inside the XMP tags. So, the above is correct minus the P and BR tags scattered around the end of lines. If you (a reader) are going to use this fix, please follow the link so you can see the proper XML in its original, unwordpressified glory.

Hello Boolean,

After what you've said perhaps the best idea is to fix postfix. Apparently (search apple discussions for posts by Bill Scott) Apple's plist file is Broken.

The fix is:
% cat org.postfix.master.plist

<xmp>
< ?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
        <key>Label</key>
        <string>org.postfix.master</string>
        <key>Program</key>
        <string>/usr/libexec/postfix/master</string>
        <key>ProgramArguments</key>
                <string>master</string>
        <key>RunAtLoad</key>
                <true />
        <key>OnDemand</key>
                <false />
</dict>
</plist></xmp>

Yeah, I saw that in your post that you found this from the Apple Discussion forums. Frankly, it's surprising to me that people are still having this problem and that it hasn't been fixed yet, or that a proper fix hasn't been posted somewhere.

One note about the postfix bug is that it may be triggered by an error in another application or configuration. If you're setup to launch postfix automatically when mail arrives in the mail-drop folder, it could be a latent time-bomb that will appear when you have your first system error. The error reporting system in Tiger seems to like to send out mail to the administrator (as it does in other 'nixes) and this is triggering postfix to start up. I see errors in my logs (after errors in my logs) about postfix not being started and unable to add to mail-drop.

Here's looking for 10.4.3...

Odd you should mention comments on your first week with Tiger, I've just left one. The comments left by others (MTEQC) hint at why Postfix is trying to run and also how to sort it. This site is linked from Apple Discussions as well, hence why people are still finding it. Myself, I go the postfix error when upgrading to Tiger, an Archive and Install fixed it. Only for it to reappear just a couple of days ago. I can only assume that in installing MYSQL and wordpress it's caused some interaction with Postfix.
