The Eve of Xbox360

It’s the Eve of the launch of the Xbox360. After hearing all manner of noise about there not being enough 360s for the launch and Microsoft intentionally holding back stock to create a pent-up demand, I’ve settled down to a sort of calm detachment about the whole procedure.

The recent debacle with the Civ4 release pushed me to make some fairly wild and outrageous claims about the notion of preordering from retailers. While I’m still on the fence about the relative merits of preordering, I’m not feeling out-right hostile about it. That may change tomorrow and I’m setting myself up for some huge disappointment if getting to a Future Shop two hours early to stand in line isn’t going to get me the object of my encampment. I will bring coffee and a camera to document the event.

One theory which I haven’t heard too much of, is that the possible reason for an Xbox360 shortage could rest with IBM. As Apple users have found out, the production for the G5 hasn’t been quite up to snuff since they introduced the chip. This new variant for the 360, running at over 3GHz and with multiple cores is brand new. It also throws into stark light just how much IBM might have been giving Apple the shaft in terms of their G5 speed limits. This on top of the near-simultaneous world-wide launch of the 360 must surely be taxing IBM’s Fishkill, NY facility to the limit.
