.Mac attack

Dotmac AttackI’ve been using .Mac for almost a year now and recently had an email to check my credit card info to make sure it’s up-to-date for the auto renewal that is about to take place. I gotta say, it’s hard to justify since I’m unable to sync my machines at the moment. For the past week or so I’ve been getting these “Unable to sync” errors and they’ve been pissing me off.

.Mac is a useful service, but the syncing part of it is the least explicable. Why should I need to dump my stuff over a slow connection to a place that I don’t own and control? Why is this necessary when I have a perfectly serviceable server-grade machine sitting on a fast local network? It’s asinine. For that matter, why does Backup need to check in to see if I have a .Mac account before I can use it? Make it a separate product. Better yet, make it part of the operating system.
