UltraNewb??
I’ve been reading the Lifehacker blog for awhile and find it frequently informative and helpful. So it came as quite a shock this morning when I was flipping through my feeds and discovered this… this affront to myself. Clearly an infringement on my own trademarked nickname, they have mashed-up my domain name and tweaked the modifier to something called “UltraNewb“. Ok, so I don’t have a trademark and my occasional nickname is “the Permanoob“, but it still hurt a little bit that they didn’t bother to send a heads-up or include some gentle props.
Anyway, if you’re interested in how to import videos into your iPod, I suppose you could read their article. Or feel free to send me a note. I’m way better at this sort of thing than they are. Honest.
UltraNewb: How to copy videos to your iPod - Lifehacker
I personally find it useful to import based on playlists. As my iTunes video collection grows, I can’t store all of the video on my 80GB iPod alongside my music collection which generally takes precedence over film. With this arrangement, I can drag and drop videos into my Movies playlist or add a new playlist for a particular show, say, Arrested Development and add that to my TV Shows group and then add it to the list of subscribed playlists in the iPod’s TV Shows section. Podcasts are subscribed to individually and filtered based on whether they’ve been viewed or not.
I noticed some commenters from the Lifehacker post were asking about video conversion. For those on Macs, I highly-recommend Instant Handbrake for importing from DVD. It’s fast and does a great job. For transcoding from existing formats, I generally use Quicktime Pro and export to iPod video. It gets it done and with the right combination of codecs and plugins, will even handle Xvid/DivX video.
